Are Implants My Only Option for Lip Enhancement?
Lip implants used to be the most popular option for lip enhancement. Although lip implants did have a few benefits, they also had many downsides. Placing lip implants is a surgical procedure and, thus, it requires downtime in order to recover. There is also a greater risk of complications, which can lead to a distortion in the lip’s appearance. Today, we most commonly recommend lip augmentation using dermal fillers or surgical lip enhancement without a synthetic implant but, rather, using your own tissue (e.g. SMAS).
Dermal fillers are an excellent option for lip enhancement. We often use hyaluronic acid fillers, a highly biocompatible type of injectable filler. The filler is injected into the lip to add volume, fill in lines and wrinkles, and shape and contour the area. Results are immediately visible and last for months. - Lip Lift– During a lip lift, a strip of skin is removed just under the nose. This advances the red lip onto the white lip. This is an excellent option for patients with a long white lip and thin red lip.
- Lip Advancement– Lip advancement involves a series of incisions inside of the mouth to advance the red lip mucosa on the inside of the lip to the outside. This creates a fuller looking lip.
- Lip Augmentation via SMAS Grafting– Dr. Velargo often performs lip augmentation with SMAS grafting in conjunction with a facelift. The SMAS, which is normally discarded during a facelift, is used to augment and enhance the lips. The SMAS is implanted into the lip, providing a durable, natural feeling alternative to implants. Dr. Velargo can perform this procedure without a facelift, but some additional incisions will be needed to harvest the SMAS.
