What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck (also called abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure that removes skin and fat from the stomach area. It also tightens muscles for a smoother, flatter stomach. While many can benefit from this procedure, it is most often considered by women after childbearing or by adults that have lost a substantial amount of weight. It is not a weight loss treatment, but a way to reshape and slim the stomach and waist area when you are already close to your ideal weight.

Here at the New Orleans Center for Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery our tummy tucks are performed by Dr. Hendrick.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

If you’re interested in a tummy tuck, come in and meet with Dr. Hendrick. After carefully analyzing your health and body he can help you determine if a tummy tuck is the right procedure for you. In general, good tummy tuck candidates:

  • Are Close to Their Ideal Weight
  • Not Planning a Significant Change in Weight (including pregnancy)
  • Carry Excess Fat/Skin In the Stomach Area

Some patients that have tight skin, but excess abdominal fat can benefit from liposuction alone. If you’re planning future pregnancies, wait until you’ve finished having children before considering a tummy tuck to ensure that your results will last. If you remain at a stable weight and avoid future pregnancies, your tummy tuck results can last a long time.

Will a Tummy Tuck Eliminate Stretch Marks?

Many men and women are surprised to learn that a tummy tuck can reduce the appearance of stretch marks. If you have stretch marks, Dr. Hendrick may be able to remove some of them during the surgery. It can also reduce cellulite in the stomach area.

What Is Recovery Like After a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is a major surgery and you will need time to recover. Typically Dr. Hendrick recommends 1-2 weeks off from work. You’ll need to avoid exercise a bit longer, usually 6-8 weeks. We’ll give you pain medication for any discomfort and will check in with you several times during recovery to ensure that you’re healing as expected.
