Gynecomastia is a condition that affects males and is a result of over-development or enlargement of one or both breasts. This change can be associated with genetics, hormonal changes, and even certain drugs and medications.

Gynecomastia is characterized by the presence of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin of one or both breasts on a male. This can result in physical and emotional discomfort to the patient, often affecting one’s self-esteem and confidence.

Gynecomastia surgery entails removing the excess breast tissue, fat and skin to create a more natural, flatter appearing male chest. This procedure is very similar to a reduction mammaplasty or breast reduction in a female.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?

Dr. Hendrick typically performs his gynecomastia procedures under general anesthesia. Each case in gynecomastia surgery is individually tailored to the patient’s anatomy, physical appearance, and desires. Therefore, depending on the severity of the condition, Dr. Hendrick will use the appropriate techniques to achieve the desired result.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING RECOVERY FROM GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?

Post-operatively, you should expect to experience some tightness, swelling, bruising, and soreness. These symptoms will gradually subside in the weeks following your surgery. You will be prescribed pain medication to help with any discomfort you experience. You will be fitted with a surgical chest support after your surgery, which you must wear for several weeks.

Incisions are cared for each day by cleansing the incision lines with mild soap and water, and any external stitches will be removed during a post-operative examination. Most patients take 7-10 days off from work after gynecomastia surgery. Exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. Be sure to always discuss activity restrictions with Dr. Hendrick to avoid any complications after surgery.

Typically the results are long-lasting, but weight gain and continued use certain medications or drugs can cause changes in the post-operative results or even enlargement of the remaining breast.

Most of the time, gynecomastia surgery is not covered by insurance, however, in some cases, insurance companies have been known to cover the surgery. Dr. Hendrick’s staff will be glad to assist you in reviewing your policy to determine coverage.
