Have you recently lost a lot of weight? Have you had a baby? If you answered yes to either of these questions, odds are, you have some breast sagging. What can you do? This guide to breast surgery after pregnancy or weight loss will answer many of your questions. You can also make an appointment for personalized advice.
Why Do My Breasts Sag?
Breast sagging (also called breast ptosis) occurs naturally with age. Most women will experience some breast sagging during their life. While all women experience some sagging, the degree of that sagging can vary substantially and that is where weight loss and pregnancy come in to play. Losing more than 50 pounds and pregnancy are both big contributors to breast sagging. The amount of sagging experienced increases with each pregnancy.
While most of the causes of breast sagging aren’t preventable, there is one big change you can make to reduce the severity of the problem. Smoking is a major contributor to breast ptosis as it breaks down the elastin in the skin. Don’t smoke… your breasts (and the rest of your body) will thank you.
What Can I Do About Saggy Breasts?
Breast sagging is inevitable, but you do have options. If you have saggy breast, a breast lift is one of the best treatment options. A breast lift removes excess breast skin, repositions the remaining tissue, relocates (and resizes, if needed) the nipple/areola and creates a more youthful positioning and shape for the breasts.
While a breast lift is very effective at repositioning and reshaping the breast, it cannot add additional volume on its own. If you’ve volume due to weight loss or pregnancy, a breast implant is needed to restore this volume. Many women opt for breast augmentation with their breast lift as the procedures can generally be performed together.
Am I Ready for a Breast Lift?
Breast lifts provide long-lasting results, but it is important to remember that the original causes of your breast sagging can reoccur. Over time, gravity and aging will take its toll on your breasts, even after a breast lift. Pregnancy and weight loss can also lead to additional sagging. If you’re planning on losing a large amount of weight or getting pregnant in the near future, talk with Dr. Hendrick. It may be a great time for a lift, or he may recommend waiting until your weight stabilizes or until after pregnancy.
