When efforts to lose weight fail to budge pockets of fat on the body, liposuction is an effective way to contour those areas. Liposuction can also eliminate a double chin and tighten the neck and jawline when aging or weight gain has caused excess fat to accumulate there.

Dr. Velargo works with patients desiring facial liposuction, while Dr. Hendrick performs liposuction for body contouring. Both of them have helped numerous patients look and feel better by removing stubborn fatty tissue.

Liposuction is frequently performed in conjunction with other plastic surgery procedures, including rhytidectomy (face lift/neck lift), tummy tuck, brachioplasty (arm lift), body lift, and thigh lift.

What can liposuction accomplish?

Liposuction can:

  • Remove stubborn localized pockets of fat from a variety of areas, including the jowls, chin, neck, abdomen, waist, love handles, thighs, hips, buttocks, upper arms, knees, and calves

What happens during liposuction?

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that is usually performed using a local anesthetic and sedation, but in some cases, general anesthesia may be preferred.

Prior to the procedure, Dr. Hendrick or Dr. Velargo will map out the problem areas to be addressed. During the procedure, small incisions are made to gain access to these areas. Next, tumescent solution is infiltrated into the areas to be liposuctioned. This method provides anesthesia to the surgical sites, decreases blood loss, and reduces post-operative bruising.

After the solution is placed, excess, unwanted fat is removed using suction through a special liposuction cannula. Incisions are then sutured closed, and a compression garment is placed over the area.

If fat grafting is to be performed, the extracted fat is then procured to remove excess fluids and non-viable fat cells. The healthy, viable fat is then injected into the desired areas using a small cannula.

What can I expect during recovery from liposuction?

Depending on the extent of your liposuction, you will be advised to take 1-2 weeks off from work and other normal activities. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4-6 weeks.

You will be given a compression garment to wear during the healing process, and you will be prescribed pain medication to manage any post-operative discomfort.

Incisions are cared for daily by cleansing the incision lines with mild soap and water, and any non-dissolvable sutures will be removed during one of your follow-up examinations.

A full set of instructions will be given to you prior to your surgery. During your pre-operative visit, do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

How long do the results of liposuction last?

Liposuction typically has long-lasting results. However, with weight gain, fat can accumulate again in the same areas. Maintaining a steady weight is your best defense against the need for future liposuction.

Does insurance cover liposuction?

Since liposuction is a cosmetic procedure, insurance companies do not cover it.
